The city operates its own compost site located on Veterans Memorial Highway next to the Sewage Treatment Plant. The compost facility is open to the public April 1 through November 30. The compost site provides yard waste dumping as well as compost and wood chips to Saginaw and surrounding areas. Compost is available to city residents free of charge if self-loaded. Compost and wood chips can be delivered for a fee.
Screened compost / per yardConvenience Station
The Convenience Station is open to City residents on the 2nd Saturday of every month from 10:00AM to 2:00PM. Yard waste and brush can be dropped off at this time during the winter months. Items that can be dropped off include recyclables, building materials, furniture, trash and other miscellaneous items. No paint or chemicals are accepted. Open to City residents only. Residents must show a valid Michigan driver's license or identification as proof of residency. Convenience station is located behind the Public Works building at 1435 S. Washington Avenue.
Rubbish Collection
The City rubbish collection services are provided by Mid-Michigan Waste Authority contracted through Waste Management Inc. Weekly rubbish collection is provided to residents. Residents may set out up to 20 bags or cans of household generated trash each week. Trash must be in bags or trash cans no larger than 33 gallons. Each bag or can should not weigh more than 50 pounds each. All trash must be securely contained in bags or cans to reduce litter and discourage pests
Recycling
Bi-weekly curbside recycling is provided to City residents starting April 2, 2012. Official recycle bins or bins less than 35 gallons and that weigh less than 50 lbs and properly labelled as "Recyclables Only" may be used. Recycle bins can be picked up / purchased at the Public Services Building (1435 S. Washington Avenue). One recycle bin per address is provided free to residents. When picking up bins, identification will be requested for verification purposes. Additional bins can be purchased for $8 per bin. The City recommends residents print their address on their recycle bins with permanent marker. Place all paper and paper goods in a recycling bin or a paper bag set inside the bin. Empty, flatten and cut down cardboard boxes into pieces no larger than 2 foot by 3 foot and place in or under recycling bin. Place all glass, metal and #1 and #2 plastic containers together in the recycling bin. Remember to empty and rinse all containers before recycling. Removing labels is not necessary. Throw plastic lids in the trash. Recycle metal lids. Flatten containers when possible. Yard Waste
The City yard waste collection program operates from April 1 to November 30 Yard Waste collection services are contracted with Mid-Michigan Waste Authority through Waste Management Inc. Additional information regarding yard waste collection services is available on MMWA's website at State law sets requirements on how yard waste must be handled and disposed. Yard waste is defined as grass clippings, yard vegetation, sod without dirt, small twigs and leaves. Yard waste is collected in paper compost bags and yard waste bins. 33-gallon paper compost bags and weigh less than 50 pounds. Paper yard waste bags may be purchased directly from local retailers, including grocery, hardware and home improvement stores. Two bulky items per week may be set out on your regular collection day. Yard waste is collected in paper yard waste bags and bins properly labeled "yard waste". "Yard Waste" stickers can be picked up in the Clerk's Office at City Hall (1315 S. Washington Avenue) or at the Right-of-Way Division in the Public Works Service Center (1435 S. Washington Avenue). Yard waste is collected for composting with your weekly refuse. Place yard waste in 33-gallon paper compost bags or bin labeled "Yard Waste". Set out yard waste same day as trash collection. Close bags and use lids on bins. Brush 2 inches or less in diameter can be included with yard waste. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be accepted. Do not exceed 50 pound weight limit. Please do not mix other material and debris with leaves. Do not rake yard waste into the street
