Welcome to the Department of Biological Sciences at ClemsonBiologists study all aspects of life—from the structure and function of molecules and cells to the behavior and interaction of organisms, communities, and ecosystems. We then apply this knowledge to areas such as medicine, conservation, and agriculture. Our motto, From Cells to Ecosystems, captures the excitement of discovery and dedication to the scientific process found in our large department. The applications of biology affect the health and well-being of individuals in their societies and the continuation of earth as a balanced ecosystem. We aim to produce informed citizens who not only contribute to the scientific community, but also to the ongoing dialogue concerning the many ethical, social, and political issues that have biological context or consequences. To these ends, our undergraduate program leads to B.S. and B.A. degrees in Biological Sciences and a B.S. in Microbiology. Additionally, we offer emphasis areas in entomology, prepharmacy, prerehabilitation, quantitative biology, toxicology, secondary education, and biomedicine. The graduate programs include MS and PhD degrees in Biological Sciences and Microbiology. There is also a 5-year BS/MS program in Biological Sciences and Bioengineering. Faculty members in Biological Sciences also participate in the interdepartmental MS and PhD programs in Plant and Environmental Sciences and Environmental Toxicology. Our NSF REU (National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergradutes) program will be accepting applications mid-October. This program offers a collegial, multi-disciplinary environment with a focus on an emerging challenge in biology. Meeting such a challenge requires expertise across cellular, organismal, and ecological scales. Students will be paired with faculty members who have a strong commitment to working with undergraduate students and promoting the diversity of the biosciences community. Students can choose from a range of disciplines in the Life Sciences to get hands-on experience designing and carrying out exciting and doable research projects. Learn more. |
