Onondaga County is the local solid waste management planning unit for 33 of the 35 municipalities in the County. Like many other local planning units, Onondaga County developed its first Solid Waste Management Plan in the early 1990s. Since that time, OCRRA, a public benefit corporation, has implemented a Comprehensive Solid Waste Management System (CSWMS) on behalf of Onondaga County.
It has been nearly 25 years since the development and approval of Onondaga County’s Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan and, although the 1991 Plan is still quite relevant today, to remain current with State requirements the County has proposed updates to the Solid Waste Management Plan that reflect revisions to evolving State requirements. The Draft Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan Update carefully examines every element of OCRRA’s existing CSWMS. It discusses opportunities for program improvement and considers alternatives to the current programs. The update also examines major historical changes impacting solid waste management over the past quarter century and sets forth future projections.
