To report a missed collection of trash, recyclables or yard waste, please call Waste Management directly at (401) 847-0230. Waste Management has the ability to dispatch a truck back to your house generally within 24 hours.

Weekly Curbside Collection is available to residential dwellings with up to eight units per property. Each eligible household is issued and allowed one set of city-issued carts, including one trash cart and one recycling cart. City-sponsored collection is not provided to properties serviced by a commercial collection container or dumpster.

Are you a new resident? If you are moving to Newport or just moved here, you can request a new resident packet which goes over the solid waste and recycling program in more detail. Packets can be requested by calling the Clean City Program at 845-5613.

Businesses Within a Residential Dwelling are not entitled to City sponsored waste collection. Collection service is provided to residential units only. All businesses must hire private collection.

Set Out Time: All material to be collected must be set out at the curb for collection by 6 a.m. on the day of collection and may not be set out earlier than 7 p.m. the night before the scheduled collection. Empty carts should be removed from the curb as soon as possible after they have been emptied.

Holidays: In the case of a holiday, all collections following are delayed by one (1) day. Saturday collections will only be made to compensate for a holiday occurring during the week. Please note that collections are not affected by the following holidays: President's Day (February) and Rhode Island Independence Day (May 4th).

Inclement Weather: Inclement weather may include snow, extreme heat or even a hurricane. If the weather becomes hazardous to the safety of Waste Managements Hauling staff collections will be stopped until trucks can safely manage the roads. Please call (401)847-0230 for any information on cancellations.

Bulky Waste and items that don't fit in your cart is collected on the first and third Thursdays of the month, by appointment by calling Waste Management at (401) 847-0230. All bulky waste items need to be affixed with a pre-paid Bulky Waste Sticker in order to be collected. Visit the Bulky Waste Disposal page for complete details.

Items Not Collected in the curbside collection program include, but are not limited to, brick, concrete blocks, dirt, automobile parts and hazardous materials. If in doubt, please call first.

Cardboard Boxes must be flattened and placed inside your cart in order to be collected curbside. Please dispose of pizza boxes through the refuse collection program, or rip off the clean lid and recycle and throw away the bottom. Visit the Recycling page for details on how to recycle large amounts of cardboard that won't fit in your cart.

Small scrap metal items, CAN NOT be recycled in your recycling bin, as of June 2012. The Clean City Program can now collect scrap metal at our office during regular business hours, please visit the Recycling Drop-Off page for more information. Such items include, but are not limited to: pots and pans, wire hangers, used clothes irons, metal toasters, small appliances (like hair dryers, curling irons, coffee pots, etc).

For residents living in a dwelling over 8 units: Although you are not eligible for city-sponsored recycling collection, you can still recycle.

Clothing and Textiles: The City of Newport's Clean City Program is working with nonprofit Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State as well as Planet Aid, in an effort to reduce solid waste by recycling clothing, shoes, and other textiles. There are several collection containers around the city, please refer to their website for a complete list of locations, including one in the city yard at 80 Halsey St.

Yard Waste Collection

Yard waste is defined as leaves, grass, herbaceous material, brush, and branches up to 3 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter. Yard waste can be set out in brown paper leaf bags or loose in barrels up to 32-gallons in size. Barrels no longer need to be labeled "yard waste." Twigs & branches can be bundled with twine into reasonably sized bundles if they do not fit into bags or barrels. Free "yard waste only" stickers are available from the Clean City Program office located at 80 Halsey Street. Yard waste must be free of litter and will not be collected in plastic bags.
