Waste Management Indiana

Solid Waste Management Districts (SWMDs) are your local authority for information about recycling, yard waste, and household hazardous waste (HHW) services. In 1990 P.L. 10-1990 required each county in Indiana to form a SWMD. According to P.L. 10-1990, solid waste management districts were required to develop plans with guidance from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), in accordance with a state plan model developed by IDEM. These plans provide policy guidance on source reduction and alternatives to dependence on final disposal facilities.

Today IDEM continues to collaborate with SWMDs in efforts to promote pollution prevention and recycling. Currently there are 72 SWMDs, with 6 multi-county districts and 66 single-county districts. On this web page you’ll find information about different aspects of SWMDs.

Education Curriculum Model & Education Guide

In accordance with SECTION 40. IC 13-20-17.5-6, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and the Association of Indiana Solid Waste Districts (AISWMD) have developed a science based curriculum model and corresponding environmental education programs that correlate to Indiana standards. This program guide is for the utilization of Solid Waste educators across the state.
