RECYCLING INFORMATION (PDF)

Garbage is collected by Waste Management. Garbage must be placed in special bags in order to be collected. The bags are sold in packages of 10. The cost is $10 for 10 of the large bags and $5.00 for 10 of the small bags. Bags can be purchased at: The City Center, Swift Hardware, Surplus Outlet, Jim's Foodmart, Econo Foods, and Wal-Mart.

Garbage is collected on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Garbage must be placed on the curb by 6:00 a.m.. Waste Management honors the following holidays. Your garbage pick-up will be delayed one day after these holidays:
New Year's Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

The map below shows the day garbage will be collected.

All utility bills contain a $6.50 charge per unit to cover the cost of the garbage pick-up and hauling.

Swift Hardware in Downtown Houghton offers recycling services for old batteries and light bulbs. Small charges may apply.

Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles can be recycled locally. Rockwood Concepts at 3295 County Rd. (U.S. Hwy. 41) in Mohawk accepts asphalt roofing shingles for recycling. Make sure your contractor knows you want your old roof recycled and not just thrown in a land fill. Why throw away when it is CHEAPER and environmentally responsible to recycle!
